Re: Migration

To actually answer your question and not give you wiki links to the definition of the word migration...

Once you install the new version, assuming you are just upgrading the same server to 8.5.3, start domino once the upgrade is done. It will ask you if you want to update the design of your address book, if you choose yes it will apply the default 8.5.3 design to your address book. Don't do this if you have a heavily modified design. If you are using the canned template, then choose yes. I can't recall if it asks about mail templates, but I don't think it does.

Since you are upgrading from 8.0.2 to 8.5.3 the mail template file and names will be different. So there are a couple things you should do.
1. Make sure that Create_R85_database=1 is set in the server's notes.ini.
http://www-10.lotus.com/ldd/dominowiki.nsf/dx/create_r85_databases

2. Replace the design of the mail files with the new template. I recommend using the following method. You can create a text file all of the mail files listed in the following fashion.
mail\userfile.nsf
mail\userfile2.nsf
Where userfile is the users mail file. You can get a list of the mail files by going to the files tab, the mail folder, highlight all, then click on edit, then copy. Open excel and paste, you'll get a columnar list of the mail files. Copy the column that has the mail\ path into your text file. Save the text file as a .IND file.
Copy that IND file into the data directory on the server.
If you have a lot of mail server you can split up the list and stage the template conversions.

The next step you can do manually or create a program document if you want to schedule the conversion.
Manually: run this command
load convert -f yourfile.IND * mail85.ntf -u
the -f tells it to convert the mail files in the IND file, the -u tells it to upgrade the users folders to the new templates $INBOX design.

Create a program document:
In domino admin, the configuration tab, expand the server, then click on programs. Click the Add Program button.
In the program name field type nserver
In the command line field type with the quotes included
-c " load convert -f yourfile.ind * mail85.ntf -u"
Choose the serve to run on (would be your mail server)
Choose Enabled or Disabled, pick a time and day.
Save and close the program document.

If you use this method, I suggest removing the DESIGN task from SERVERTASKSAT1 in the notes.ini on the server. Just put it back when you're done replacing the designs. This method lets you roll out the new template how you wish, all at once, or staged depending on how you build your IND file(s). You can make multiple IND files and multiple server programs too, so you could upgrade users A-F one night, G-M another and so on. Or if you don't have that many mail files, just run the command manually from the server console.

If the mail files are on ODS R8 from 8.0.2 you can use this same method of using IND files to run the compact command to convert the ODS to R85. The server program name would be Compact, the command line would be yourindfile.IND -ODS. You can also use a -c, a copy style compact to upgrade the ODS.

If you are moving the mail files to a new server and keeping the same name, follow the steps Karl listed, then do these steps once you know the server is up and running.

I hope this helps you get from 8.0.2 to 8.5.3.
